Cern's experiments probing the fundamental nature of the universe create a lot of data—roughly four times that held in the US Library of Congress—every second. The EU research institution has a long history of generating more data each day than most companies do in a lifetime, during its experiments colliding particles travelling at close to the speed of light.

20/02/2017 OpenStack Superuser Containers on the CERN Cloud

We have recently made the Container-Engine-as-a-Service (Magnum) available in production at CERN as part of the CERN IT department services for the LHC experiments and other CERN communities. This gives the OpenStack cloud users Kubernetes, Mesos and Docker Swarm on demand within the accounting, quota and project permissions structures already implemented for virtual machines.

To celebrate, we tapped Michael Klemm (the current CEO of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board, or ARB) and some of his colleagues to give an overview of the newest features in the specification―particularly, enhancements to task-based parallelism and offloading computations to specialized accelerators.

CERN Openlab Summer Student Programme 2017 is launched by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research to train students on the latest hardware and software technologies and teach them to incorporate IT solutions into high energy physics. CERN Summer Internship Programme is offered to students pursuing graduation or postgraduation
for at least three years in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics who are interested in working on advanced IT projects for a twomonth period between JuneSeptember 2017. Students who are still pursuing their course are also eligible to apply provided that they finish their courses prior to the start of the program. The last date to submit CERN Openlab Summer Student Programme Application Form is 15 February 2017.

You will be involved in the procurement of hundreds of servers and tens of petabytes of disk storage yearly for the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid Tier-0 centre at CERN as well as for the many services run by other groups in CERN IT and its associated remote hosting centre at the Wigner institute in Budapest, Hungary. Testing and integration of new technologies such as the hardware available through the Open Compute Project (OCP, http://www.opencompute.org) will be part of your activities.
